Heng: No one will be left behind
Single parents and the underprivileged should seek immediate help from the nearest Welfare Department office so that the government can assist them in various aid programmes, said Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Senator Datuk Heng Seai Kie.
She said the ministry had instructed the Welfare Department to investigate each reported case and see what kind of aid could be given.
"To ensure that no one is left behind in the country's development, the ministry monitors welfare cases brought up by non- governmental organisations (NGO) or through the media.
"An officer will keep tab on such cases and act immediately," she said.
She pointed out that there were 104 Welfare Department offices nationwide where the poor and needy could go to seek help.
Heng made a special visit to the family of single mother Lim Lee Kheng, 29, at Taman Impian, Alma, near Bukit Mertajam recently after her plight was highlighted in the Chinese vernacular newspapers.
Lim, who has four children aged between one and eight, lost her second husband recently.
Heng said the family would receive a monthly aid of RM100 per child and a sewing machine under the Teman 1Azam and a RM2,700 special grant to commence a tailoring business at home.
Heng also said those facing such problems like Lim's should come forward and ask for assistance from the Welfare Department.
"In urgent cases, the ministry will come and visit the family to see if aid has come to them," she said.
Also present were Penang MCA secretary Lau Chiek Tuan, who is also the Bukit Mertajam Barisan Nasional (BN) coordinator, and Penang MCA Public Complaint Bureau chief Tan Teik Cheng, who is also the Padang Lalang BN coordinator.
