Spotlight on Golden Triangle

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's premier shopping district was transformed into a dazzling world of lights and music as the newly-launched Bukit Bintang KLCC (BBKLCC) street lights amazed shoppers and visitors to the Golden Triangle.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen launched the first phase of the BBKLCC street lighting, a series of decorative lights lining the streets from Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL and Sungei Wang Plaza to Berjaya Times Square.

"This is a celebration of a new tourism product. Malaysia is known for duty-free shopping, and it is only right that this shopping district is made attractive so more tourists will shop in the country," she said in her officiating speech at the Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The event was organised by the BBKLCC Tourism Association, a group of shopping malls, retailers and hoteliers in the area which oversees marketing activities and development in the shopping district.

The RM2mil street lights project was a key initiative under the Tourism New Key Economic Area (NKEA) by the BBKLCC Tourism Association, in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia and Pemandu.

BBKLCC Tourism Association chairman Joyce Yap said the project was to elevate the shopping district's status to rival renowned shopping areas like London's Oxford Street and Singapore's Orchard Road.

The project includes two archways at Bukit Bintang and KLCC, a lighted fountain design at Berjaya Times Square and chandelier-designed lights at lamp posts along the roads.
