Dong Zong should not take words too literally

Dong Zong president and deputy president Dr Yap Sin Tian and Chow Siew Hon are both misleading the Chinese community over the new Chinese independent school in Kuantan by taking the words in the approval letter by the Education Ministry too literally.

Before independence, there were only 60 independent schools around. There was no recommendation to restructure secondary schools to follow the independent school module after independence. The approval for the school in Kuantan has set a new precedence, but yet the two Dong Zong leaders continue to raise all kinds of arguments such questioning the status of the Kuantan school, without any real proof.

Both Dr Yap Sin Tian and Chow Siew Hon's arguments are baseless; moreover they are looking at the whole Kuantan Chinese school issue in a negative light when instead they should be lookinga t it in a positibe way, ie tht the development initiative of this Kuantan school is set as a future reference model for the entire Chinese community.

Besides that, in the existing 60 independent schools within our country, there is a variety of teaching modules such as the single education system and the dual education system which incorporates both government and UEC syllabus. It is compulsory for the Malaysian examination system to be based on this, but Dong Zong only wants to question the concept of a pure independent school.

Dr Yap Sin Tian and Chow Siew Hon do not dare enough to give a clear definition of how a "pure" Chinese independent school should look like. Once it is being defined, Dong Zong had forced the entire existing independent school into a dead corner. If we are going to follow a "pure" or "mutated" independent school using Dr Yap's and Chow's standard, then many Chinese independent schools will become "not qualified" and "mutated" independent schools. Will Dong Zong now strike off these schools from independent schools?

Once the standard has been defined, I am afraid that many of Chinese independent schools will not match Dr Yap's and Chow's standard and become "mutated" independent schools. Thus who is going to bear the responsibility after this?
