Penang BN Launches Petition For Free Port, Monorail

GEORGE TOWN — The Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) launched a signature campaign as a petition to voice the demand of the people who wanted a free port and monorail in the state.

Its information chief, Tan Cheng Liang, said copies of the petition would be distributed to all BN state assemblymen, state assembly coordinators, organisations and industries in the state.

"The petition will collect signatures for a month before being forwarded to the federal government for further action. Individuals supporting the petition can sign them at the nearest BN service centres," he told reporters after launching a campaign to sign the petition here on Thursday.

Tan said, the state BN was confident the petition would be positively considered by the people in the state as it involved economic interests, in line with the National Economic Transformation Plan mooted by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

He rapped the action of the state government under the opposition coalition which was against the petition through their blogs, reflecting their worry on BN's capability in carrying out its proposal.

Recently, state BN chairman Teng Chow Yeow was quoted as saying, among the state BN manifestos for the 13th general election was to turn Penang into a free port and the monorail project.

However, Najib, when commenting on Teng's statement said, Penang already had five free trade zones and the concept of a free port in the state no longer existed.
