Cronyism the norm for Selangor Pakatan govt
It is time for the Selangor Pakatan government to play by the rules and stop abusing its power by promoting its own personal interests. As reported in The Sun (27 June 2012), there is a "magic pen" dilemma in Selangor where it is a cultural norm among the people to expect state officials to give their signatures in support letters.
Giving out signatures of approval so arbitrarily is in direct contradiction to the Pakatan's stance of encouraging government accountability, merit-based delivery and transparency. Once again, Pakatan has shown that its ideals are merely rhetoric and lack implementation. I urge the Selangor office bearers to end their longstanding streak of nepotism now.
Ratepayers at losing end when Pakatan's favouritism at play
Pakatan's rampant use of cronyism in Selangor is nothing new. Its favouritism was first exposed when political secretary to the Menteri Besar Faekah Husin was discovered to have written a support letter for her relative's law firm to be included in a state GLC's legal panel.
Another previous example is the case revealed by popular blogger Paja Petra who claimed that legal work by MBPJ was given to firms with links to Subang MP Sivarasa, PKR VP N.Surendran and MBPJ councilors Latheefa Koya and Derek Fernandez, while the most recent case will be where MBPJ had chosen to give a contract to a firm linked to Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng to collect debts from a restaurant even though this law firm charges RM55,000 over a more competitively-priced firm, which only charged RM15,000.
Favouring a preferred law firm should not cause a tear in the rakyat's pockets. Ultimately, it is the rate-payers who end up having to pay higher charges on the legal fees assigned to the favoured law firm. If Pakatan is truly committed to government accountability, it needs to stop playing favorites, act professionally, and appoint law firms based on competency and merit.
