BN: Let’s work together

BARISAN Nasional has sought feedback from the Penang Chinese Town Hall (PCTH) on BN's proposed plans for Penang.

Penang Barisan chief Teng Chang Yeow said that PCTH, with more than 500 Chinese associations under its umbrella, was instrumental in channelling the needs and opinions of the Chinese community to the coalition.

"The PCTH is one of the country's largest umbrella bodies for the Chinese community so we hope to get their views on our proposals for the people.

"We also want to share with them our vision for the state and how Barisan can benefit the Chinese, as the PCTH has very close ties with the community," Teng said.

He was speaking before attending a closed-door dialogue session between Penang Barisan leaders and the newly elected PCTH committee members on Wednesday.

He said the PCTH's views were important as it had more than 50,000 members who comprised between 10% and 15% of the state's voters.

Teng had earlier announced plans which included restoring Penang's free port status, transforming Seberang Prai into an international financial district, setting up innovation dynamo parks, setting up aquaculture hubs and focusing more on the services sector.

The establishment of a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at the North Butterworth Container Terminal site on the mainland was also being mooted.

Penang Barisan political affairs committee chief Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said Barisan's relationship with the PCTH had always been close even now when the coalition was the Opposition in Penang.

"We can still work together to solve the problems that affect the Chinese community and Penangites as a whole. A Chinese problem is also a Malaysian problem," he said in his speech.

PCTH chairman Datuk Lam Wu Chong said PCTH was a non-governmental organisation that was "very happy" to cooperate with both the state and the Federal Government so long as the policies implemented were beneficial to the people.

He reiterated PCTH's call for Penang and the Federal Government to implement several resolutions passed during the town hall's recent annual general meeting.

The resolutions include the restoration of Penang's free port status and the construction of the Penang Outer Ring Road.

A monorail was also suggested to ease the worsening traffic situation in the state.

"The PCTH will endeavour to reflect the wishes of Penangites and support the 'People First, Performance Now' policy to promote peace, fairness and prosperity.

"A government that listens to and shows concern for the people will bring a better tomorrow for Penang," said Lam.

Some 50 Barisan and PCTH representatives attended the dinner and dialogue.
