Leaders, keep it sincere
MCA grassroots leaders must reach out to help the people with sincerity in order to convince them that the party is always with them.
Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said there must be regular interaction between the party and the people in order for the party to know their problems, needs and expectations.
Gatherings or meetings must also be conducive for such interaction, he added.
"Gatherings involving thousands of people may look impressive but they are not conducive for good interaction.
"Smaller gatherings of about 300 people may be more effective in terms of personal interaction.
"It is even better if leaders, especially grassroots leaders, can conduct house-to-house visits," he said when opening the joint annual general meeting (AGM) of 10 Perak MCA divisions in Kamunting on Wednesday.
Dr Chua also directed grassroots leaders to take the initiative or be pro-active, by coming up with their own programmes instead of waiting for instructions from the divisional heads for instance.
He also advised grassroots leaders to move around in groups of three or four when conducting house visits instead of in huge groups.
"You have to go to the people and not expect the people to come to you," he said, adding that there must be follow-up until the problems are resolved or all promises made to the people are fulfilled.
"Malaysians are grateful people and they will reciprocate to leaders who genuinely care for them," he stressed.
Dr Chua said the party had put in place several programmes; on education, medical, business development and welfare for the people's benefit.
He noted that the programmes would only achieve its objectives when the leaders work to ensure the beneficiaries – the rakyat – know and understand the programmes and have access to them.
Citing the latest programme, the 1MCA Member Group Insurance Scheme, he said grassroots leaders must make every effort to reach out to the members and help them to register.
"Johor tops the list with 30,000 of the 100,000 members registered for the insurance in the last two months, followed by Perak with 18,000," he said
The scheme, provided free of charge for the MCA members, comes under a Group Accident Insurance Policy, and the premium is borne by MCA.
Family members of the deceased will get RM10,000 if death was due to accident and another RM4,000 bereavement aid. They will only get RM4,000 bereavement aid if death was not due to accident.
Members who suffered permanent disabilities will get RM10,000, while those with partial disabilities will get RM5,000.
Dr Chua advised members to register with the scheme as soon as possible to get the protection, adding that over 30 relatives of party members had made the claims so far.
"Death is something beyond a person's control," he said.
The party has about one million members.
Dr Chua said new members were also eligible for the scheme.
He said the MCA central committee had decided last week that the registration for new members who would also be qualified for the scheme be extended from July 31 for another two months.
Coverage for new members will be effective 90 days from the date they are officially registered as a party member.
