MCA to work on agreement with Taiwan for mutual recognition of degrees

MCA is working on developing mutual recognition of university degrees between Malaysia and Taiwan, said party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He said Malaysia was able to reach mutual recognition of university degrees with China recently after the party worked on the matter for over four years.

We will adopt the same approach and hopefully, we can also reach a similar agreement with Taiwan, he said at a charity dinner to raise fund for the expansion plan of SMJK Chong Hwa recently.

He said there were some technical details the relevant authorities would have to go through, including the assessment by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, before both countries could proceed to sign such an agreement.

Dr Chua said achieving mutual recognition of university degrees with Taiwan was one of the many education issues that the party was working on.

It is not true that the party is only concerned about issues relating to Chinese independent schools.

We are also collecting information on conforming schools (Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan), he said.

He said currently, conforming schools had problems such as non-Chinese speaking teachers holding management positions, lack of allocation and discrepancies in school administration.

Dr Chua said the party did not try to resolve issues by releasing press statements but it had always been working closely with the Chinese community to improve Chinese education in the country.

We will discuss these issues with the Education Ministry and we believe that most of them can be resolved, he said.
