Reinforcing river banks

HELP is on the way for residents of Tringkap, Cameron Highlands, who suffered a massive flashflood exactly a year ago.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who visited the new village last Saturday, announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had granted a special allocation of RM300,000 for flood mitigation works to be carried out in the area.

"Work will be carried out to expand and reinforce the banks of a nearby stream to increase its capacity.

"A 10.6m-wide bridge will be constructed across the stream after the expansion exercise," he told reporters after meeting Tringkap villagers at the village's indoor stadium.

According to Liow, the project would not take too long to complete since it was not a mega project.

He added that the Public Works Department would be working together with the Drainage and Irrigation Department on the project, adding that it was still in the initial planning stage.

"I will be meeting with both the departments to see if we can get additional funding for each of them.

"If need be, I will try to get more allocations from the Federal Government," he said, expressing his concern that RM300,000 might not be sufficient to carry out the entire project.

A vegetable farmer, who only wished to be known as Chai, said flood waters had reached the chest level during last year's flood.

"The villagers do not wish to experience the same destructive floods again," he said, adding that his electrical appliances and one of his lorries were damaged in the flood.

Chai, who is in his 40s, opined that the rapid development in the area could have caused the floods.

"With the hillside forest being cleared away for development, there are no more water catchment areas," he said.

During his visit to Cameron Highlands, Liow also handed out special allocations amounting to RM490,000 from the Prime Minister to several temples and also for a Chinese cemetery expansion project.
