Damaged bus roof a lurking danger
THE roof of a bus stop in Jalan New Ferry, Butterworth, is posing a danger to commuters after it was rammed by two heavy vehicles within a month.
According to the public, a speeding express bus lost control and rammed into the bus stop's roof. Several days later, it was hit again by a lorry.
Acting upon public complaints, Bagan Dalam Barisan Nasional coordinator M. Karuppanan along with Sungai Puyu Barisan coordinator Sum Yoo Keong visited the bus stop, located in front of a church.
Karuppanan chided the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) for not repairing it immediately as it was posing a danger to passengers, who were waiting at the bus stop.
"It may also be a danger to students from the nearby girls' secondary school, who wait there," he said.
He said the roof might fall off any time, and questioned whether MPSP was waiting for any tragedy to take place before it acted on the matter.
"This is not something to be taken lightly as it might fall on the passengers waiting there for their buses," said Karuppanan, who is also Penang MIC secretary.
"I am sure the MPSP personnel would have noticed it," he said.
Sum, who is also Bagan MCA deputy chairman, called on the council to act immediately before any tragedy takes place.
He added: "MPSP has been sitting on the problem too long. They should have reacted fast by going after the contractor who was given the task to do it.
"This is very saddening as the council is waiting for us to make noise before it acts on it."
Anantha Kumar, 56, a retired civil servant, said he was worried about the roof falling down as his daughter, who is studying at the nearby secondary school, usually waited for her bus there.
B. Balakumar, 48, a factory worker, also said his daughter waited there to take the bus home after school, adding that he was worried the roof might collapse if it was not repaired soon.
