Japanese employer of Algeria dead to help families get compensation

PORT DICKSON: The employer of two Malaysians killed in the Algerian hostage crisis says it will help their families get compensation from the Algerian authorities.

A representative from their Singapore-based Japanese employer JGC Corporation Pvt Ltd, Kudu Hiroyuki, said this at the funeral of Tan Ping Wee, 48, here yesterday.

Tan, along with Chong Chung Ngen, 55, were killed in a hostage crisis at the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria on Jan 1.

"We empathise with the families of both Tan and Chong over their loss. We will do our utmost to help them claim for damages," said Hiroyuki, adding that he would be paying his last respects to Chong in Ipoh later.

The hearse carrying Tan's body left his home in Taman Bukit Samudera here at about 11am, accompanied by family and friends. He was buried at Fairy Park Memorial here.

Tan's remains together with that of Chong arrived at the KLIA cargo complex at about 9pm on Monday.

Tan's widow Koh Siow Mun, 42, and 16-year-old son were seen being consoled by family members.

Tan and Chong were among 130 employees of the oil and gas production company located in the Sahara desert held hostage by an al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group.

Three other Malaysians K. Ravi, Lau Seek Chaing and Patrick Purait Awang returned home safely.

Also present at Tan's funeral was state MCA chairman Datuk Dr Yeow Chai Tiam.

In IPOH, a sombre mood hung over St Michael's Church as fami- ly and friends mourned the death of Chong.

People were seen consoling Chong's wife Karen Tham, 54, and daughter Rachael, 21.

Newsmen, some of whom were there as early as 5am, left at the request of the family.

Some relatives also asked photographers not to take pictures of Chong's coffin.

State executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon presented a contribution of RM3,000 on behalf of the state government to Tham.

He was accompanied by Ipoh Timur MCA chief Datuk Thong Fah Chong.
