Goodbye to floods of misery
THE RM10mil bypass project in Sungai Tanjung Pauh and Sungai Pendang in Kedah will bring sunny thoughts to residents fed up with flood problems.
The project comprising a 14km bypass from Sungai Tanjung Pauh to Sungai Baru and another proposed bypass in Sungai Pendang is expected to reduce flooding once it is completed in 2015.
It will allow excess water to flow directly downstream without going through the residential areas.
The Kedah Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Mohd Abu Bakar Othman said that the department were still looking into the project in Sungai Pendang.
"The flood mitigation project is meant to reduce floods in the long term," he told reporters.
He was speaking after a dialogue session with Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung in Kampung Jalan Fajar on Saturday.

During the dialogue session, residents expressed their frustration and disappointment and urged the authorities to solve the flashflood problem in the area.
Kampung Jalan Fajar Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKP) chairman Abdul Rahim Putih said uncollected garbage had blocked the drains in the area.
"The garbage trucks used to come once every three days but recently, they come to collect the garbage only every fortnight," he said.
Chor, who is also Alor Setar MP, assured the residents that warnings would be issued to the relevant companies to ensure they follow the weekly garbage collection schedule.
"Despite the numerous efforts by the Federal Government in various flood mitigation projects, it is almost impossible to assure zero flood cases.
"But at least, the upcoming project will help to reduce the flood damage," he said.
