Task force chief: Opposition using illiterate Indians
KUALA LUMPUR: Some Opposition politicians are using illiterate Indians to gain cheap publicity, said Datuk N. Sivasubramaniam, the chief coordinator of a government unit looking after the welfare of the Indian community.
It had become the trend for Opposition leaders to bring poor Indians in buses, give them some money and food, and then send them home without their issues being resolved, said the Special Implementation Task Force for Indians (SITF) chief.
Sivasubramaniam was commenting on a protest led by PKR vice-president N. Surendran outside Parliament House last week demanding that the Government identify the alleged 300,000 Indians without documents and promptly issue them MyKads.
Surendran also highlighted the case of 17-year-old B. Reshina who was dismissed from school two weeks ago as, it was said, she did not have an identity card to register for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, although her father is a certified citizen.
Sivasubramaniam said that under the nationwide MyDaftar campaign organised by SITF, 14,385 people had registered, with 9,529 of them providing the complete documentation.
"We have awarded citizenship to 5,593 people. It is absurd to claim that there are 300,000 people without documents," he said.
He said he had contacted Reshina's school and was informed that the girl had stopped schooling on her own accord.
"She had been registered to sit for SPM this year.
"She had sat for the UPSR and PMR examinations without any problem. The school had been asking her to bring her father to submit an application for her citizenship but she did not comply," he said.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and MIC Youth leader T. Mohan had previously criticised Surendran for making wild statements.

Mohan has been quoted as saying that Surendran was trying to be a champion as the election was coming.
