Perak state to hold workshop on treatment of animals and pets

THE state will organise a workshop to discuss matters pertaining to stray animals and their welfare on May 14.

State executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said all dogs and pet owners, pet shop operators, the Ipoh City Council and veterinarians would be invited to share ideas on the issue during the workshop.

"There have been many concerns about the treatment of animals and pets that need to be addressed.

"Folks that want to disown their pets and discard them on the streets is one such example, which is a pitiful sight," Dr Mah said after chairing a meeting with Noah's Ark Ipoh on Monday.

"The workshop will be a good platform for all parties to share ideas and to come up with solutions to animal abuse or issues with stray animals," he said, adding that the time and venue would be made known later.

Dr Mah also said that Noah's Ark, a non-governmental organisation that looks into matters pertaining to animal rights, have suggested that they worked with the city council to look into complaints on stray animals and animal abuse.

"The movement said its members are willing to go down to the ground together with city council enforcement officers to investigate claims and reports.

"We could set up one such committee, consisting of Noah's Ark and the city council enforcement officers," he added.

He said Noah's Ark has also suggested to have a mass neutering of pets.

"Noah's Ark said they can find the resources to perform the neutering for pets at a reasonable price," he said.
