Syariah Court Judges Hear 800 Cases Annually

KUALA LUMPUR Shortage has forced syariah court judges to hear at least 800 marriage and divorce cases annually, Dewan Rakyat was told Thursday.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said the shortage led to the postponement and backlog of many divorce cases.

We applied for 12 lower court judges but were approved only six and for high court we asked for eight and were approved four, she said in reply to a supplementary question from Nasharudin Mat Isa (PAS-Bachok) who asked about measures to address the postponement of divorces cases.

Dr Mashitah said the appointment of female syariah judges to hear divorce cases since a year ago proved a success.

We have two female judges. The first was appointed last year. The second appointed on March 1 is responsible for all cases in Melaka syariah lower court.

To a supplementary question from Datuk Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong), Mashitah said the government was prepared to delegate power of syariah court to others like kadi in straight forward cases.
