NazriKUALA LUMPUR, March 29 A total of RM11,185,542.93 (11.2) million was spent on 16 by-elections since 2008, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said today. The Minister in the prime ministers department, in a written reply Datuk Md Sirat Abu (Bukit Katil MP) said that that government did not plan to replace by-elections with any other system despite the exorbitant costs.Of course a by-election will involve a big expenditure..these things involve transportation fees, lodging, food, drink... the government does not plan to study the existing laws on by-elections because the need to have one is based on the federal constitution and Elections Act 1958, said Nazri. The federal government spent the most on the Batu Sapi by-election (RM1.29 million) and the least on Bukit Selambau (RM318,000).All the by-elections held between 2010-2011 registered the highest amount of government expenditure- Hulu Selangor (RM1.2 million), Sibu (RM1 million), Batu Sapi (1.29 million), Galas (RM1.047 million), Tenang (RM1.1 million). The Merlimau and Kerdau by-election, which was held earlier this month registered RM755,000 and RM915.000 in expenditure costs.
