Kit Siang should intervene on PAS' Islamic state agenda

DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang should step in and intervene on the insistence of PAS leader Dato' Seri Nik Abdul Aziz in establishing a theocratic government so as to avoid a national crisis.

It is plainly obvious that PAS is adamant on holding on to their ultimate goal of establishing an Islamic state despite the verbal promises made by DAP leaders on the continued guarantee of a secular government.

In 1999, when Dato' Seri Hadi Awang was the PAS Deputy President, he had said that the establishment of an Islamic state will follow religious doctrine, and that religious decrees must cover all forms of government transactions including the legal, cultural, educational, political, and familial aspects.

On 28 June 2001, Hadi Awang once again made it clear once more that should PAS win the elections, they will turn Malaysia into a theocratic state encroaching into the nation's economic, social and political systems.

In 2008, DAP and PAS aligned themselves and had successfully won Kedah and held onto Kelantan. PAS had then disregarded DAP and implemented many Islamic polices which runs counter to the secular government principles of DAP. Unfortunately, DAP was helpless to protect the rights of the non-Muslims, standing by helpless while watching PAS trample on their basic rights.

Besides that, on 23 April 1994, Nik Aziz had also mentioned that if any party opposed PAS' leadership in its method of administration, it is haram.

Hadi Awang had also come out with several controversial statements regarding Pakatan, such as saying that PAS will amend the Constitution to turn Malaysia into an Islamic state. DAP had neither corrected, nor resisted PAS when they implemented hardline religious-based policies, and no matter how many times DAP claims that they will govern the country in accordance with the Federal Constitution, it is getting harder and harder to believe them
