Govt approves KTAR upgrade to Uni College status
MCA HQ, 31 Jul – A few months after MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek announced that the MCA Central Committee had decided that MCA will apply to the government to upgrade Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (KTAR) from college to university college status, the party chief announced that consent has been granted for this MCA initiative. "We are glad to announce that the Ministry of Education has approved the KTAR to be upgraded to university college." This was delivered by Soi Lek in chairing a press conference convened upon the conclusion of the MCA Presidential Council meeting.
KTAR status as university college takes effect from next year. The MCA President explained that "it is effective from next year because (the status upgrade) normally will start with new academic terms. Otherwise it will create confusion."
Govt continues to fund KTAR
In another development, Soi Lek also informed that Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak in his capacity as Minister of Finance has agreed that government funding for KTAR will carry on. "We are also glad to announce that the Prime Minister as Minister of Finance has also agreed for special funding for KTAR will continue. This funding will be for capital expenditure and operations."
To a reporter's question as to the special funding which the government has allotted for KTAR's funding, Soi Lek briefed that "it varies from year to year because of capital development." He then cited the amount which KTAR has received so far from the government which ranged from RM30 million to RM60 million before adding that "next year, we have been told that the government has approved RM56m for the upgrade and partially to help in capital expenditure and operations. Next year, they approved the allocation of RM56m which we requested."
KTAR grads gainfully employed within 6 months
In view of KTAR's status upgrade, our party forsees a jump in the student enrolment. "We expect the number of students going to KTAR to go up tremendously because our courses are still very competitive in prices. KTAR has a long established tradition of offering affordable quality education, where all graduates are employed within 6 months."
That KTAR certificate and diploma holders are gainfully employed within half a year is testimony to the education quality of the institution, thereby rightfully deserving of the university college status upgrade.
Lim Guan Eng may have craftily turned his debate with the party President into a ceramah as a launch pad to verbally assail MCA, and he had his motives for labeling MCA as "shame on you" during the debate when criticizing MCA's establishment of KTAR to inculcate much sought after talent and skills into Malaysian youths. However, what sort of contributions has DAP undertaken to Malaysians in terms of education development? The Rocket has none to show at all, apart from inciting Malaysian youths to turn against BArisan Nasional.
For all the condemnations which oppositions charge against, MCA will never waver in our commitment of delivering and developing quality and affordable education for the enhancement of Malaysian youths.
