Getting people to make wise choices

GROWING up in Batu Pahat, MCA 's earliest training on managing a business was helping his father keep an eye on the family grocery shop.

Like most grocers, his father Chua Chong Seng would record his customers' purchases using the traditional 555 brand notebook, as some customers would buy first and pay later.

The elder Chua, who taught his children prudence and business, was remembered by many for supplying daily essentials to his customers despite they not being able to pay up.

With them are (from left) MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha and MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

"That was what my father taught me 50 years ago," the 65-year-old Dr Chua said about DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng's "money makes money" model at the Feb 18 debate.

The 52-year-old Chief Minister had used the model when replying to a question by Dr Chua, who had asked what would be Pakatan Rakyat's socio-economic model if the opposition came into power.

The floor erupted into laughter but the reply from Lim, a chartered accountant by training, was no laughing matter though.

Lim, the son of DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang, may be a darling during ceramah — touting his populist policies and slogans and poking fun of MCA and Barisan Nasional — but facts speak louder than words.

Pakatan's Buku Jingga has pledged every household a minimum monthly income of RM4,000 if they take over Putrajaya. There are 3.8 million such households in the country.

Dr Chua said the country would be bankrupt within two years of the five-year tenure if Pakatan implemented all its pledges.

It is ironic that while DAP has been on the offensive against MCA, their grassroots leaders have quietly re-directed those seeking help to go to MCA instead.

As Dr Chua puts it: "We (MCA) never ask people's political affiliations when they approach us for help."

The 1MCA Medical Foundation mooted by him about a year ago has used RM4.6mil to help 697 patients of all races.

Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman has trained 175,000 graduates, including some DAP leaders.

But for Dr Chua, working quietly is no longer enough these days.

He wants the party members and leaders to work smart and adopt a high profile approach when carrying out services to the rakyat.

This is to enable the people to make informed choices at the ballot box.

"I dare to say that no party has done better than MCA when it comes to providing services to the people," Dr Chua said.
