Death Toll Rises To 183

MEXICO CITY The number of bodies found in clandestine graves in Mexicos San Fernando municipality of the state of Tamaulipas has risen to 183, Xinhuas news agency reported Mexicos prosecutor Marisela Morales as saying Tuesday.

During a press conference, Morales said that in the last few days, federal and state agents found four more graves, taking the total number of mass graves found in the municipality to 40.

She also said authorities had detained 74 people, including 17 policemen who worked for criminal organisations.

Morales said that the Federal Police rescued 119 people who were traveling in passenger buses and had been kidnapped by allegedly members of the Gulf Cartel.

During the latest operations, police has detained Sarahi Fabiola Diaz who is accused of being involved in many of the killings in Tamaulipas.

More than 36,000 people have died in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon declared war against the drug cartels and organised crime shortly after taking power in December 2006. BERNAMA
