10 Malaysians caught smuggling RM24m worth of drugs into NZ

AUCKLAND, April 27 Ten Malaysians who were part of a tour group to New Zealand were arrested yesterday for trying to smuggle in NZ$10 million (RM24 million) worth of methamphetamine in their shoes yesterday.According to a report in the New Zealand Herald, Customs officers first discovered the drugs when they stopped two members of the group at Auckland International Airport. The drugs were found after they were questioned and searched.The rest of the group was then tracked down by Customs officers and airport police. The 10 eight men and two women who range in ages from early 20s to late 60s were carrying between 800gm and 1kg of methamphetamines in their shoes.The newspaper reports that the street value of the drug is approximately NZ$1 million per kilogram.Customs drug investigations manager Mark Day is reported to have said the bust involved the biggest number of drug couriers ever caught in a single incident at the New Zealand border.According to Customs minister Maurice Williamson, there was a similar attempt by a Taiwanese tour group last year but they were also caught.The 10 are expected to be charged in court today.
