POLITICS: MCA must stand out and fit in at the same time - New Straits Times
I was delighted to read what MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said when he called for Malaysia to have a "mindset paradigm shift if it wants to break out of its superficial and race-centric cocoon".
He said MCA hoped to go beyond being an ethnic-based party. "Rather, we need to change our mindset and way of thinking so that it embraces all races, cultures and beliefs.
"We must bear in mind that irrespective of race or income status, we are all stakeholders of this country."
MCA needs to adopt a multiracial outlook quickly.
This is the best way forward for the party. It must not continue to look at everything from a Chinese viewpoint but from a Malaysian perspective.
After 54 years of independence, we need to look at issues as Malaysians and not pigeon-hole them into Malay, Chinese and Indian ones.
Economic growth has produced political confidence and national pride. Global growth produces many good things, but also many problems. Malaysia will not be equipped to tackle them if we persist in our race-centric mindset.
The power brokers in the new global arena will be the knowledge facilitators. The empires of the future will not be built of concrete, but of the mind. Today's political success is of the mindset, not race or ethnicity.
We must remember the hardships our forebears survived to pursue the dream of a better life in Malaysia. Their long hours at work to put food on the table is the work ethic all Malaysians carry with to this day.
We must instil the confidence to believe that anything and everything is possible no matter what the circumstances.
Our interconnectedness in an increasing borderless world demands that our parties develop a global perspective.
The 2008 general election opened our minds to conquer ignorance, prejudice and mediocrity.
MCA must be willing to stand out while fitting into the Barisan Nasional political environment.
MCA must be a team leader, not just a team member of BN. MCA can no longer say: "Why don't they do something?"
