Selangor offers land for new al-Taqwa orphanage

Khalid hoped the states offer would help the orphans find a new, safer home. file picKUALA LUMPUR, May 23 Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim today offered state land for a symbolic RM1 premium to parties willing to build a new home for survivors of the al-Taqwa orphanage damaged by a landslide on Saturday.This to encourage noble efforts besides ensuring such homes are built in safe locations, the Selangor mentri besar was quoted saying in a Bernama Online report today.The orphanage in Hulu Langat was partially buried by a landslide on Saturday, which killed 16 people and injured another nine. It was home to 49 residents prior to the tragedy.The 24 uninjured children are currently being housed at the Lembah Azwen Resort, close to the scene of the incident.The horrific disaster has sent parties scrambling to offer aid to victims and their families.Less than a day after the incident, Selangor promised the families of those who perished RM1,000 each, only to be trumped by the federal governments RM10,000 pledge.The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development today said it would give each victim RM1,500.Penang also promised RM25,000 to the 25 victims trapped or killed during the landslide. This was delivered to the victims families today by PAS central committee Mohamad Sabu on behalf of the state government.
