Malays be wary of DAP, warns Muhyiddin
The deputy prime minister, who is also Umno deputy president, was responding to a recent statement by Defence Minister and Umno vice president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in which he said that the DAP is planning to field Malay candidates in the next general election.
Muhyiddin said that the move is a tactical manoeuvre to shore up its Malay support base since the DAP has never fielded Malay candidates in the past.
He added that it is ironic the DAP has branded Umno a rascist party since it has only contested in Chinese-majority areas themselves and that this accusation was untrue as both Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) have a track record of championing the interests of all Malaysians irrespective of race.
Muhyiddin continued that the DAP is attempting to deceive the Malays into believing that it is a party that champions the interests of all races with its Malaysian Malaysia platform.
In reality, however, the DAP remains a chauvinistic party that has never cared for the wellbeing of the Malays and instead, is intent on disputing policies aimed at helping them, he countered.
He also reminded Umno members to remain united in the build-up to the general election to ensure a resounding victory for BN.
Political observers expect the general election to be called any time between now and early next year.
