May 28, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today said it made arrests in cases involving as much as RM1 million in bribes. It said this while revealing the 442 arrests made during all of last year, which included 160 foreigners. The arrest shows that the MACC is firm and we hope the public are also firm in rejecting bribes, no matter how small the amount involved, MACC director for community educations Datuk Samsiah Abu Bakar said today. The MACC has been fighting negative perception over its efforts in combating corruption after a spate of unsuccessful prosecutions. It has also been accused of going after trivial cases while ignoring the so-called big fish, a view its commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed addressed personally.Im also hungry for big fish, actually, he said during the 15th Malaysian Law Conference at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last July. Its image also took a severe blow following the deaths of political aide Teoh Beng Hock and Customs deputy director Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamed while involved in the commissions investigations.Today, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Sutinah Sutan sought for non-governmental bodies and the public to aid in the commissions efforts to battle corruption. The NGOs can be the eyes and ears or watch dog to report any malpractices, she was quoted saying in a Bernama Online report today.
