He said many people had misunderstood the real meaning of 1 Malaysia, the concept introduced by the prime minister.
“1 Malaysia means the government will treat all the citizens fairly and equally according to what is provided in the constitution. You cannot run away from the constitution,” he said in his speech when meeting his Facebook fans at the Tropicana Golf Club and Resort here tonight.
Under the constitution, Dr Chua said, all Malaysians had the right to education, and cultural and religious freedom.
“Although the Chinese are citizens, in Malaysia they are not assimilated like those in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
“You maintain your Chinese name, you may be a citizen but you are not assimilated. You only have what we call integration but not assimilation.”
Therefore, he said, to achieve a non-racial party or country, might take a longer time than expected.
“And I would say there is no single party in this country that is non-racial.
“So, race will be with us for some time to come, but we hope as the country develops and Malaysians become more educated and confident in our daily life and racial interaction, we can fully realise the 1 Malaysia concept,” he added. — Bernama
