Najib pays last respects to Chong Eu
Najib arrived at Dewan Seri Pinang here, where Lim's body was lying in state, at 10.15am, accompanied by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Koh Tsu Koon and several cabinet ministers including Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai and Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen.
The prime minister paid tribute to Lim, saying he had contributed a lot towards national unity.
He was a leader who cared a lot for the future of the country and this was exemplified when he led Gerakan to join Barisan Nasional in 1972, Najib said.
"He chose BN as the best platform, for the future of Penang and the country," Najib told reporters.
He said Lim had also brought Gerakan to join the BN because he was confident of the leadership of Tun Abdul Razak, the prime minister of Malaysia at that time.
"He will be remembered by the country and the people," he said.
Lim, who died on Wednesday, was Penang chief minister for 21 years from 1969 to 1990.
He was an MCA president for a year before leaving the party and led Gerakan for nine years from 1971. - Bernama
