Concern over growing colony of foreign workers
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional leaders have expressed concern over the high number of foreign workers around Komtar.
Former Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Lee Hack Teik said the area within the vicinity of Komtar had turned into a 'foreign worker village' with the high number of foreigners there.
"We can see plenty of Bangladeshi and Burmese workers in places like Jalan Gurdwara and in Komtar.
"The state government should view the matter seriously as it could result in social and security problems," he told a press conference in Jalan Gurdwara on Tuesday.
Lee questioned if the state or the Penang Municipal Council had a proper plan to solve the problem.

"Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng can point fingers at the police, saying it is their duty to ensure public safety and all, but the state government should also be responsible for the improvement of the safety and security of Penangites,'' he said.
Penang MCA Youth chief Tan Hing Teik said the state should consider allocating certain space for the foreign workers to hang out, but not around Komtar where there are so many tourists and shoppers.
Tan also urged the state to set up a proper bicycle parking space in the Komtar area.
"The foreign workers travel using bicycles and would park their bicycles haphazardly," Tan added.
Also present were Tanjung MCA Youth vice-chairmen Yeoh Kean Huat and Khor Eng Chuan.
