Community seeks help for CNY celebration

THE Persatuan Komuniti Orang Kurang Upaya Pendengaran Selangor (PKOKUPS) will be organising an early Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 2.

It will be held from 6pm to 11pm at Dewan Serbaguna MPSJ in SS15, Jalan SS15/4, Subang Jaya.

PKOKUPS chairman Zainudin Ibrahim and its multi-racial committee members recently visited Kelana Jaya parliamentary coordinator Ong Chong Swen's office to invite her to become PKOKUPS advisor and invite her to the celebration.

Also present were Kelana Jaya MCA division deputy chairman Lim Kok Sai, Youth chief Lee You Hin, deputy Youth chief Chen Siang Hooi, vice-youth chief Cha Teck Seng, Wanita vice-chairman Lim Lean Huwa, Kelana Jaya parliamentary coordinator office secretary Dr Razak Zainuddin and Ong's special assistant Simon Chan.

Ong said it was a very interesting dialogue as the entire session was conducted via sign language with the help of an interpreter.

"I respect the drive and determination of the handicapped community," she said.

"Even though they face more challenges compared to able-bodied people, they do not give up. They focus on the positive aspects and work hard to get the recognition and support needed for their community.

"This is the spirit that we have to emulate."

Besides respecting those from the handicapped and underprivileged groups, Ong said the public should also lend a helping hand to support these groups in the challenges they face.

PKOKUPS' Chinese New Year open house will feature performances by the Sunway Lion Dance Troupe, students from SJK (C) Chee Wen in USJ 1, Subang Jaya and PKOKUPS members' children.

It will serve as a unique opportunity for the 300 PKOKUPS members and family members to interact with the public via sign language.

The event is open to the public. A buffet dinner will be served.

Ong said the organising committee was still looking out for people who are interested in performing at the event, donate lucky draw items or contribute in other ways.
