Pakatan’s gag order means that there is a guideline for everything which is subject to prohibition
For the purpose of manufacturing an illusion of coalition unity, and to block party members from expressing their own views, Pakatan Rakyat’s issuance of a gag order is a containment against freedom of expression.
With the gag order, Pakatan leaders seek to stop public discussion on the implementation of hudud laws.
Whenever the three Pakatan Rakyat parties encountered controversy against each other, their method of solving the problem is well known among Malaysians. It is none other than “shutting up” to downplay the issue and cover up their differences. Many examples prove that they prevent their members from expressing their views freely, thereby tarnishing freedom of speech.
For example, the gag order issued by Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim against members of the Pakatan Rakyat state government from discussing about the JAIS raid against the Damansara Utama Methodist Church during a thanksgiving dinner; Karpal Singh’s directive to DAP members to stop speaking to the media on the letterheads of Selangor EXCO Ronnie Liu being abused as support letters; Pakatan leaders instructing their members not to openly discuss about seat allocation; or PAS Secretary General Mustafa Ali issuing a gag order to block their members from issuing statements against their other coalition partners.
Pakatan has always flaunted freedom of expression. However, whenever a major problem crops up, Pakatan could not disguise them. They will act like a turtle hiding its head into it body and attempt to sweep the issue under the carpet.
I hope that Pakatan Rakyat especially DAP makes their stand clear regarding the implementation of Islamic criminal laws in Kelantan; and not just use the “Chinese against the Chinese” tactic to weaken the political power of the Malaysian Chinese.
