Hishammuddin: Security not compromised with ISA repeal

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 29 Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said that the new laws replacing the Internal Security Act (ISA) will not compromise on security and public order.

He cited the examples of the rehabilitation process for detainees to be retained. However he said the period might be shortened based on the opinion of the Attorney General, Bernama Online reported.

He was speaking to reporters after meeting a Perkasa delegation of 25 members led by Datuk Ibrahim Ali.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib said in his Malaysia Day message on Sept 15 that the ISA was to be repealed and replaced with two new laws to maintain peace.

The two new laws will be enacted with the spirit of Article 149 of the Federal Constitution to prevent subversion, terrorism and criminal acts, while being in line with global trends.

Hishamuddin (picture) said todays meeting, with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar in attendance, was to explain the ISA repeal.

He said the discussion was rational, with the focus on how to balance human rights and national security.

The Perkasa delegation presented a memorandum to Hishammuddin during the meeting.
