Zulkifli’s new yarn — The Malaysian Insider
There is one thread that ties the likes of Zulkifli Nordin and other Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers who become ‘independents’, they are spinners of incredible yarns.
The Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP’s latest story is a “secret contract” between PKR and DAP that will ensure Chinese dominance should PR capture Putrajaya.
The ex-PKR MP turned independent critic of the opposition claimed that even PAS was not aware of the contract in an inflammatory speech in Parliament yesterday.
“The contract promises that Chinese leaders in DAP will be given autonomy in Penang,” said Zulkifli told Parliament during the debate on Budget 2011.
Funny, he never made noise previously about Penang always being under a Chinese Malaysian when under Barisan Nasional (BN) rule until Election 2008 threw out the Gerakan-led state government.
The other funny thing is, Zulfkifli appears to not have heard Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s presidential address when opening Umno’s 61st general assembly last week where he said the privileges and rights of the Malays are fully protected under the Federal Constitution and cannot be disputed.
The independent MP also probably did not hear other parts of Najib’s speech.
Najib had said that after gaining independence for 53 years and that Malaysians were now facing relentless pressure on the main thrusts in racial relations which had existed all this while, this national polemic could possibly pose a threat to national solidarity.
“What poses a problem under these circumstances is that there will be tension when history is ignored or forgotten as time goes by, or when there are irresponsible groups who try to re-interpret all this to suit their interests or narrow agenda,” he added.
The prime minister also said the Malays had actually made the biggest sacrifice to achieve independence, when they were willing to share the ownership of ‘Tanah Melayu’, which was their motherland, with the other races.
But Zulkifli, who was once closely associated with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a friend and lawyer, chose to lash out against other races and raised the bogey of Malays being supplanted by other Malaysians.
It is a yarn used by others before him. To defend what is also enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
He wants to be a champion of what the founding fathers had already agreed when the country gained independence. Unlike these men who were brave enough to overcome prejudices and fear of losing control, Zulkifli is as they say, wants to ‘tumpang glamour’.
And in his ride for 15 seconds of fame, he will do anything and say anything to achieve it.
As he has done on Thursday, October 28, 2010. One must remember that date, the day when Zulkifli spun another long yarn.
