Will Umno field Razaleigh for Galas by-election?
KOTA BHARU (Harakahdaily) - Outspoken UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is the member of parliament for Gua Musang where the Galas state by-election will be held, is expected to maintain a low profile during campaigning.
PAS Kelantan's election director Abdul Fatah Harun said Razaleigh had his own strategies to face the election, but added that it would be best for him to "stay in the background".
“We cannot underestimate the Ku Li factor," he told Harakahdaily today, adding that the prince-politician had several run-ins with UMNO leaders recently and may not be in the right frame of mind to campaign for the party.
The Galas state seat is currently vacant following the death on Monday of the PAS incumbent Che Hashim Sulaiman. The late Che Hashim wrested the seat from BN in 2008 by a 646-vote majority, securing 4,399 votes against BN's 3,753 votes.
Galas comprises of 65.4% Malay, 22.3% Chinese, 1.8% Indian and 10.50% Orang Asli voters.
The other state seats in the Gua Musang parliamentary constituency include Nenggiri and Paloh, both with UMNO as the incumbents.
Razaleigh (left), Gua Musang's UMNO chief who is believed to wield a strong following in this traditional UMNO stronghold, had earlier stated he would help his party to be returned to the constituency.
Razaleigh's role will be closely watched, following his recent support for the Kelantan state government's demand for oil royalties from Petronas, which had been met by criticisms from his UMNO colleagues.
Last month, Menteri Besar Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat filed a suit against the national petroleum company, claiming unpaid royalties since 1998.
