Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is qualified to contest the PKR presidency - but he wants party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to go for the post.
Zaid, who received nominations from the Keningau and Sembrong divisions to vie for the top post, said Anwar should contest in the name of democracy.
“The world is watching. In any democratic organisation, elections are vital to select a leader.
“A leader who is elected can also be removed via the election process; this is a fundamental principle of democracy to hold leaders accountable,’’ he said.
On whether he was interested in mounting a challenge for the president’s post now that he has qualified for the race, Zaid said at the moment he was eyeing the deputy president’s post.
Zaid said although Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was the party president, the real power was in the hands of her husband, Anwar.
“It is not about whether Anwar is comfortable with this arrangement, as pointed out by vice-presidential candidate Datuk Seri Chua Jui Meng,’’ he said.
Chua had said that Anwar’s position as the de facto leader was higher than the president.
Zaid said this was against democratic practice.
“And, is this the kind of culture we want in a party which claims to fight for democracy and justice?’’
On the chaos during several divisional elections, Zaid called on PKR leaders to stop blaming “outsiders”. “Why blame everything on outsiders?
“We should put a stop to the culture of intimidation and fear.
“This is exactly what we have been complaining about Barisan Nasional,’’ he said.
