Statement by MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek in response to Dong Zong memorandum to the Government
MCA is committed to mother tongue education and will not play lip service like DAP or Parti Keadilan Rakyat.
I have communicated with the Prime Minister and his deputy yesterday and they are fully aware of MCA's stand on the recognition of United Examination Certificate (UEC) and mother tongue education.
I have also asked all the four MCA Ministers to raise all the issues in Cabinet tomorrow.
Minister in the Prime Minister's department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz seems to have said that the demands of Dong Zong is fair and let us hope that he will not sing a different tune in Cabinet.
Nazri is forever playing to the gallery and is fond of commenting without understanding the real issue contained in the memorandum.
MCA has been fighting for the recognition of UEC since the party's new leadership came into power.
That is why there have been some changes with regards to UEC. There is now some recognition in the role played by the independent Chinese schools in training the young and talented.
UEC holders are also now accepted for admission into teachers training colleges and entitled to the National Higher Education Corporation (PTPTN) study loans.
The top 50 UEC holders are also given scholarships by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to pursue their higher education.
With the ground breaking event of the establishment of the Chinese independent school in Kuantan, the ball is now in the court of Dong Zong chairman Yap Sin Tian and his deputy Chow Siew Hon.
I once again challenge Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to include the recognition of United Examination Certificate (UEC) and the establishment of more Chinese Independent Schools and SJKC in Pakatan's common manifesto.
Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek
MCA President
