HUNDREDS of lanterns illuminated the walkway just outside Sunway Pyramid shopping centre as patrons joined the parade in the Moonlit Reunion, Pesta Tanglung 1Malaysia Parade recently for an early Mid-Autumn celebration.
The event was jointly organised by MCA and Sunway Pyramid and featured a series of cultural activities to entertain the patrons.
Kelana Jaya MCA chief Ong Chong Swen said Mid-Autumn was one of the popular festivals aside from Chinese New Year and should be part of Malaysian culture.
"More and more Malaysians of other ethnicities are starting to notice the festival. It is in the spirit of acceptance, tolerance and joy that bind us all together.
"This year is slightly different where we parade around the outdoor as well as inside the mall," she said.
The event, held for the fourth time at the mall, was officiated by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister A. Kohilan Pillay.
The VIPs were greeted with traditional performances such as kompang and urumee melam as well as lion dance, bringing a mix of cultures touch to reflect the 1Malaysia spirit.
The parade began at 7pm at the LG1 Blue Entrance of the mall and had attracted 1,000 to 2,000 patrons.
They eagerly gathered around the parade to take a glimpse of the dragon dance and lion dance performances.
Patrons were also awed by a series of dances and singing performances by SJK (C) Chee Wen students as well as the mask-changing performance after the parade.
There were huge lanterns tied with a clue at the lantern riddles section. Twenty participants who answered the most riddles correct were awarded prizes.
Retiree Chin Yew Chan, 55, who emerged as the winner for answering 19 riddles out of 20, said he was delighted to win the competition.
"I have been participating in guessing riddles in a few occasions and I have came across some similar riddles.
"This is my first time here and I enjoy the parade," he said.
Aircraft maintenance engineer Joseph Soosay, 56, felt that such event should continue and be promoted.
"My daughter is part of the dance team and it is indeed a fun and enjoyable cultural event,"
"People from other races should come and be part of the joyous celebration," he said.
