Psychiatrist claims fratricidal Terengganu youth was delusional

KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 27 A youth who was accused of killing his father using a Rambo knife in February last year was found to be suffering from delusion and hallucination during the incident.The Consultant Psychiatrist (Forensic) at Hospital Permai, Johor Baharu, Dr Badiah Yahya said the accused, Shahrul Azmi Che Mat, 20, had heard of voices disturbing him before being treated with anti-epilepsy medicine.The accused was also not pretending to be suffering from mental problems when he had epilepsy while he was at the hospital, she said when giving evidence at the trial before High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Yazid Mustafa.He said the drug test carried out on the accused was also negative and the social report also found that the accused was not involved in drug abuse.According to the facts of the case, Shahrul Azmi was accused of killing his father, Che Mat Nik, 51, at their house in Kampung Duyung Besar, Kuala Terengganu at about 2am on Feb 3, last year.He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.In the incident, the accused was reported to have stabbed his elder brother, Irwan Affendi, 31, using a Rambo knife while he was sleeping, causing the victim to shout for help from his father.Che Mat, who was awakened from sleep, was believed to have attempted to seize the knife from the accused, but was fatally stabbed in the abdomen.Besides Dr Badiah, Irwan Affendi and the mother of the accused, Zainon Hassan, seven other witnesses were also called up to give evidence today.Mohd Yazid fixed Feb 6 for case submissions and decision.Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Jazamuddin Ahmad Nawawi appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by a counsel from Messrs Mohd Yusof Endut & Associates.
