Phang to carry on as MACC panel advisor until Feb 24
No job is done without first putting Mamak behind the bars ...
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 – Tan Sri Robert Phang will carry on being a member of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (CCPP) until February 24 when his first-term membership expires.
The MACC said today that the decision to keep Phang as a member was unanimously agreed upon after the CCPP’s meeting yesterday. The meeting was chaired by panel chairman Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam.
Phang had earlier requested to be relieved of his post to enable the MACC to investigate allegations that he (Phang) was involved in corrupt practices.
According to the statement today, an online blog claimed that Phang had tried to bribe a secretary-general of a government ministry last year.
Phang, who is also a Justice of Peace, has consistently demanded that Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail be probed for graft, saying that Abdul Gani’s explanations to the panel had failed to dispel suspicions that he was “consorting” with Shahidan Shafie, a proxy for former MAS executive chairman Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli.
Tajuddin was MAS executive chairman from 1994 to 2001. During his tenure, the national airline experienced losses totaling RM8 billion – its biggest ever – which led to complaints being lodged against him.
Phang had demanded that Abdul Gani explain allegations that his recent hajj pilgrimage was sponsored by Shahidan, who was also said to have gone for the same hajj trip.
