LABIS, Jan 28 — The statement by PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, who described those who do not vote for PAS as “jahiliah” or ignorant, has offended all Muslims in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Nik Aziz had abused Islam by issuing various “fatwa” or edicts which contradicted the religion according to the circumstances and time.

“The statement by Nik Aziz ridicules us merely because we don’t support PAS. Is Nik Aziz labelling all the voters in Labis as ignorant?” he asked reporters at a media conference at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kamarul Ariffin here today.

According to Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, the label “jahiliah” against those who did not vote for PAS should not have been uttered by someone who was said to be a spiritual leader and addressed as “ustaz”.

Nik Aziz, who is also Kelantan mentri besar, was said to have used the word “jahiliah” at a media conference in Kampung Redong yesterday while campaigning for the Tenang by-election.

The deputy prime minister said Nik Aziz had issued various deviationist edicts including stating that PAS supporters could not consume any meat slaughtered by Umno members.

“But in the Tenang state constituency, we see that PAS people are eating in shops run by Umno members,” he said, adding that Nik Aziz had also issued a fatwa prohibiting women from becoming candidates in the general election.

He called on the Muslims not to be trapped by the deviationist edicts issued by Nik Aziz.

Asked about the BN chances of winning the Tenang by-election with a bigger majority, Muhyiddin said campaigning for the by-election was showing encouraging developments.

Polling for the Tenang state seat will be held on Sunday following the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Sulaiman Taha, on December 17 last year.

The by-election will see a straight fight between the Barisan Nasional candidate, Mohd Azahar Ibrahim, and PAS’s Normala Sudirman, a former teacher. — Bernama
