Malaysia, which has been in the forefront in developing inter-national standards for the halal industry, has launched two new standards for the cosmetics and logistics businesses, a move which will expand the global halal market potential, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.
"The standard on halal logistics is a first in the world, which addresses transportation, warehousing and retailing," he said at the launch of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) 2010 and the World Halal Research 2010 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
It addresses the framework for an organisation to set up a management system based on Halalan Toyyiban requirements.
Halalan Toyyiban seeks to create a totally halal ecosystem from factory to Islamic banking and right down to consumers.
Najib said Malaysia will also set up a global reference centre in halal knowledge and halal-related services, including fatwa know-how, information on certification, capacity-building, business opportunities and incentives.
"Malaysia offers a base for international halal operators with a network and business-friendly policies," he added.
Investors can also leverage on the free-trade agreements that Malaysia has concluded to access the Muslim markets in the trade partner countries.
These include the Asean Free Trade Area, which provides access to a Muslim population of 273 million.
Malaysia also has one of the most comprehensive platforms for conducting Islamic finance activities. They include tax incentives which have been extended until 2015 and stamp duty exemption of 20 per cent for Islamic financial products.
International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said that response to Mihas 2010 has been overwhelming, attracting the participation of 163 foreign companies compared with 127 last year.
Apart from the pavilions of France, Indonesia and Japan, the event also attracted first-timers Albania, Belgium, Hong Kong and Italy.
At the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp's Incoming Buying Mission programme last weekend, there were more than 510 international buyers from over 50 countries which matched 969 Malaysian companies.
Mustapa said the biggest buyers came from China, Singapore, Australia, Russia, Japan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Ukraine.
"Unlike previously when Mihas was dominated by the food sector, it has a broader range of non-food products and services, which include cosmetics and toiletries, pharmaceuticals, food packaging and machinery, logistics, and Islamic financial services."
Mihas, which is being held for the seventh time, now ranks as the world's largest halal exhibition. The Halal Malaysia Week ends on June 27.
