Govt policy to benefit all races, says Najib

Together now: Najib, Rosmah and other leaders stirring up prosperity during the national-level Chinese New Year open house in Sitiawan yesterday.

SITIAWAN: The national transformation policy being implemented by the Government will benefit the people of all races once it is fully implemented, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said businessmen would enjoy better profits as the economic cake gets bigger.

"The Government will help the business community via facilitation funds so that they can enjoy better economic opportunities," he told a 70,000-strong crowd who turned up for the national Chinese New Year open house at the Sitiawan airfield last night.

Also present were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

Najib said there are many reasons why Malaysians should be thankful for living in a peaceful and prosperous country such as Malaysia.

Malaysia, he said, was perhaps the only country in South-east Asia that had preserved the "purity" of the Chinese culture.

"Maybe some people take this for granted but this is the kind of appreciation that has been accorded by the Government to the Chinese community in the country," he said.

Najib later said the Government would gazette the chingay as a national heritage, to the applause from the crowd.

Dr Chua said multi-ethnic Malaysians must value and defend the nation's peace and harmony.

He said this had been built by Barisan Nasional over the decades and not something by accident.

Dr Chua said under Najib's leadership, the country was now on track to become a high income nation by 2020.

"In fact, the transformation programmes by our Prime Minister have already yielded some good results in the last one year, including reducing crime rate and increasing the country's competitiveness at the global level.

"A stable and thriving economy which enables the people to earn a living is also the Prime Minister's priority," he said in his speech.

Dr Chua said Barisan, under Najib's leadership, needed a strong mandate from the people in the coming general election to continue with its transformation programmes.

Apart from that, the people must also be united against parties who were out to derail the nation's progress, he added.

"Please do not allow political fights and street demonstrations to prevail as these can destroy the economy.

"Rhetoric and populist slogans by Pakatan Rakyat will neither change the people's lives for the better nor bring long-term benefits," he said.

Yesterday, the airfield, dotted with red lanterns lighted up for the occasion, was a sight to behold as it was quickly filled by people from all walks of life.

The entertainment kicked off at 5.30pm with the SMK Nam Hwa's orchestra playing Chinese new year songs, followed by other performances such as the 24-season drum rendition by 220 drummers and the 250 lion dance troupes which danced themselves into the Malaysia Book of Records.

Earlier, guests were treated to a spread of perennial favourites char kway teow, pau, laksa and satay as they waited patiently for the arrival of the Prime Minister and other leaders.

Apart from food and entertainment, lucky draws were also held with prizes including motorcycles, refrigerators and washing machines.
