Dr Chua: At least three in 10 MCA candidates for coming polls will be new faces
BATU PAHAT: At least 30% to 40% of MCA candidates for the coming general election will be new faces, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
He said the party would make sure there was a good mix of young and senior candidates.
"I am glad to note that there are some long-serving candidates who have indicated their willingness to give way to new blood," he said after attending the Chinese New Year celebrations organised by Batu Pahat MCA division in Taman Bukit Perdana on Friday evening.
Among the MCA leaders in Johor who have indicated their willingness to make way for fresh faces are Kulai MP Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Tebrau MP Teng Boon Soon, Paloh assemblyman Hoo Seong Chang and Bekok assemblyman Tan Kok Hong.
Dr Chua, who is also Batu Pahat MCA division chief, noted that the opposition parties were filled with many leaders who were over 70 years old.
Asked about the number of young people on the candidates' list, Dr Chua said he had not gone through the details yet.
"The rule of thumb is that 30% to 40% will be new faces," he said.
Dr Chua said only a tentative candidate list was drawn up so far because the party did not know when the general election would take place.
"People do change and when the political environment changes, we will also need to change the candidates accordingly," he added.
At the open house, crowds from Taman Bukit Perdana arrived as early as 6pm for the event.
They were entertained by dragon and lion dance troupes, besides a performance from the the Batu Pahat MCA choir.
The appearance of a "God of Prosperity," generated much excitement as he went around handing out ang pow packets.
