Changes with a lady’s touch

WOMEN are hailed as agents of change as they are given the right to vote in Malaysia, said Penang MCA chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Dr Ng, who is also the Tourism Minister hoped that in light of this, women are given more opportunities to rise in the decision-making process of the country.

She delivered her speech during the International Women's Day early celebration held under the theme of 'The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum' at the Hotel Equatorial Penang on Sunday.

Later, Penang Wanita MCA chief Tan Cheng Liang said women accounted up to 42% of key roles in the country.

"They hold numerous positions in various sectors including the government bodies.

"Therefore, their contributions to the nation's development is undeniable," she told a crowd of 1,000 people during a dinner in Ng Yam Huat Hall in Bukit Mertajam on the same day.

The day is celebrated worldwide on March 8 annually.

Earlier, 5,000 visitors attended a mini carnival promotional campaign, which was held to mark the Visit Malaysia 2014 promotional drive on Sunday.

Held at the Queensbay Mall outdoor car park here, the promotional campaign kicked off with a series of line dancing and senamrobics exercise to upbeat tunes.

Visitors also toured the fair where 25 travel operators including budget airliner — Firefly, agencies and hotels put up attractive offers for the campaign.

There were also exhibition on the Visit Malaysia 2014 plans and tourism initiatives like the "homestay programme, 1Malaysia Green and Clean, 1Voluntourism, Spa/Caddy, tourism training institute, centre of excellence for Spa as well as tourism development projects in Penang.

The Fabulous Food 1Malaysia hawker stalls also spoiled visitors with choices of local fare such as char koay teow, tom yum fried vermi-celli, nasi lemak and mee goreng sotong.

Dr Ng, who launched the carnival, said the promotional campaign was a move to prepare all Malaysians for next year where the ministry had targeted a record entry of 28.8 million tourists.

She added that the rakyat should be ready to welcome tourists in all aspects including maintaining cleanliness of public areas and applying good courtesy.

With that, Dr Ng also demonstrated and encouraged Malaysians to use the "salam" greeting gesture to welcome visitors.

It requires us to put our right hand over the left collarbone with a small bow in greeting.

"It was introduced in 1999 and we hope to make it a habit for all Malaysians as a show of courtesy to (foreign) tourists," she said.
